Chairman’s report

By now Christmas is over and our thoughts turn to the New Year. In 2006 it is the turn of Isernhagen to host the Three Town meeting weekend and elsewhere in this issue you will find further details.

It is also the time of year to renew your membership, and you will have received a form with this newsletter. Please return your forms early, and give yourselves the opportunity to enter our draw for a bottle of wine – more details below.

We plan to have a variety of social event during the year, the first of which is our Casino evening in January. Please make the effort to come along and enjoy a fun New Year celebration.

FFFF or Festive Facts From France

The festive season is celebrated in a rather different way in France. Instead of turkey and all the trimmings, the French tuck in to oysters, foie gras , cheeses and charcuterie. Especially in the south of France, the main meal is eaten on Christmas Eve and the last course is the famous Thirteen Desserts (les treize desserts) which include candied fruits, speciality sweets and fruits like dates and figs.

The French call New Year Saint Sylvestre or les Reveillons and celebrate with a big meal and champagne.

They also celebrate Twelfth Night with a special cake, the Kings’ cake, in which a bean is cooked (it used to be a real bean, but is now a ceramic one). Whoever is served the bean becomes King for the night and has a gold cardboard crown to wear.

The French do not tend to send Christmas Cards, instead they send New Year wishes – les Voeux- wishing you wealth, health and happiness. The card can be sent any time up to 31st January.

German Gossip

.

The Three Town Meeting visit in 2006 is to Isernhagen, and will be from 23rd to 27th June 2006.

The programme has yet to be announced, but I am sure it will be as interesting and enjoyable as all of our previous visits. As soon as we have more information, it will be passed on to you.

We have firm invitations for 20 people, and it is possible that our friends in Isernhagen will be able to accommodate a few more people if the demand is very high. You should have received an application form with this newsletter. If you wish to go to Isernhagen, please fill in the form and return it to me, Sue Lee, as soon as possible. We expect demand to be high, and I would advise against booking any transport until you have a confirmed place.

We advise flying as the best and certainly the quickest way to get to Isernhagen. Hannover airport is only a few minutes away from Isernhagen and there are regular flights from Stansted. The best prices are usually to be found through the internet. Alternatively, if you wish to travel by ferry and road we can provide a route for you.

If there is enough interest, we may be able to run a short “Get by in German” course for anyone who would like to learn a few useful words and phrases.

Social

Don’t forget to come along to our New Year’s do at 35 Cairo Avenue on  Saturday 21st January at 7.30pm. As mentioned in the flier, this year we are holding a casino night. For an amazingly low £5.00 entrance fee you get three free cocktails, free canapés (posh snacks), free wine and non-alcoholic drinks  and complementary chips for the roulette table. We shall be awarding prizes to the people with the most chips at the end of the evening.

There will be cool, sophisticated music and soft seats where you can sit in comfort and show off your dazzling repartee. So don your DJs and posh frocks and celebrate the New Year in style.

If you are coming, it will help our catering if you let us know, but it will be fine to just turn up on the night.

If you need a lift, please contact Sue Lee on 586289

Quiz Night

The Council are running a Great British Quiz night on Friday 13th January at 7.00pm in the main hall at the Meridian Centre. Teams can have up to eight members, and Twinning has reserved places for two teams. The cost is £2.00 per person, and you bring your own food and drink. All proceeds to the Mayor’s Charities. If you wish to take part, please call Sue Lee on 586289 as soon as possible

Form E111

Don’t forget that from 1st January 2006 form E111 has been superseded by the new European Health Card. Everyone who obtained an E111 form in 2005 will automatically be issued with a new Health Card. Other people will need to apply.

The Health Card allows you to receive health care in other EU countries, and also to be reimbursed for any payments you have made.

It does not replace medical insurance for trips abroad, but is a useful addition.

Web Site

We are in the process of setting up our own web site, and have so far reserved a domain name and chosen a web host. Work is progressing slowly but steadily, and as soon as the site is ready to view we will let you know.  We plan to have links to other related sites and photographs of various Twinning activities as well as copies of the latest newsletter and “breaking news”. There will also be the possibility of contacting the association via e-mail, and of joining through the internet.

Watch this space for more details.

Fundraising

Those of you who took part in our Three Town Week-end in June of this year will be fully aware that it cost a considerable amount of money and, in the words from Brian in the last News Letter, was “a

terrific bargain”.

Well, now is the time to replenish our coffers and your Committee have already put the wheels in motion. Between November 2005 and March 2006 we have booked ten Coffee Mornings in addition to the usual five Mini Markets for next year, in an attempt to speed up our financial recovery.

This is necessary to maintain our standards for when we next entertain our guests in 2008 (2008 sounds a long way off but financial recovery is always slow and we would also like to be able to offer you a similar bargain.)   In order to achieve this, we require your assistance in helping out at both Mini Markets and Coffee Mornings – dates as

follows:-

Mini Markets  2006  -    Saturdays

11th February,

8th April,

8th July,

5th August and

23rd September.

Coffee Mornings 2006  -

Wednesday 18th January,                         Thursday 3lst January,

Friday 10th February,

Tuesday 14th February,

Wednesday 22nd February

Tuesday 28th February,

Wednesday 1st March,

Wednesday 8th March.

YOUR ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED:   if you are able to help on any of these dates, please `phone me on 585789.

Membership

It is now time to renew your membership. A whole year costs just £3.00 for an individual, and only £5.00 for a family (this includes children under 18 living at home)  Please fill in the form enclosed and return it with your fee to either Sue Lee, John Tullett or Alan Talboys. All forms returned by 31st January will be entered into a prize draw, with the prize to be announced at the AG M in March.

This year we also have another offer. If you introduce a new member, we will give you free membership for 2006.
